ABSTRACT
The project aims at enhancing sensing capabilities to perceive human presence, behavior, and health within collaborative environments through multi-sensor systems. In a world teeming with intelligent devices—from mobile applications to health sensors and autonomous machines—the seamless interaction between humans and technology is becoming increasingly vital. These devices promise to simplify tasks and ensure safety, yet the challenge lies in balancing their constant support with unobtrusive background presence. To achieve this, technology must possess the ability to comprehend human presence, mental and physical states, activities, and intentions. This comprehensive understanding is crucial for ensuring human safety, preserving health, and facilitating natural interactions. By equipping technology with the senses to discern these aspects, the project aims to enable effective collaboration among human, physical, and digital entities. Through improved sensing capabilities, it endeavors to create a collaborative environment where technology seamlessly integrates into everyday life while respecting human needs and preferences.
OUTCOMES
The project will provide more accurate, robust and comprehensive sensing solutions helping to keep people safe and healthy, through innovative combination of multiple sensors providing wide coverage and continuous monitoring. This can be split into five major objectives for the project:
- Improved innovative multimodal sensors and sensor systems optimised for advanced human observation, measurement, and interaction
- ML-based data analytics and multi-sensor fusion for (semi) real-time decision-making
- Supporting adaptive distribution of computation and algorithms across available resources from edge to cloud for efficient real-time operation
- Building a comprehensive understanding of human physical health, mental state, intentions and safety risks
- Validating the technologies in human-centric use cases in three related application domains:
- health and wellbeing monitoring and support;
- real-time traffic safety enhancement, including for vulnerable road users;
- safe interaction and cooperation of humans with robots and automated factory systems.
