SInISA
POR FESR 2021-2027 – OS 1.1 – Azione 1.1.1
ABSTRACT
The SInISA project is inspired by the pressing need to address the challenges posed by the aging population, particularly in the realms of health, social welfare, and economics. As societies grapple with the implications of an aging demographic, there is a growing emphasis on preventive measures, early intervention, and continuous care. Key stakeholders across various sectors are increasingly adopting systematic decision support systems to enhance diagnostic classification and personalized care planning, grounded in clinical evidence and established protocols.
Genetics is emerging as a crucial component in the study of aging, with a focus on somatic mutations that accumulate in tissues over time. This phenomenon, known as clonal hematopoiesis, is particularly prevalent in the elderly population and has implications for hematological diseases and inflammation-related conditions.
Two landmark studies, one by the Weizmann Institute of Science and another by the Humanitas Research Hospital, have shed light on specific mutations associated with development of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and other cardiovasculal pathologies, laying the groundwork for precision medicine approaches to disease prevention.
Despite the potential of genetic screening in identifying high-risk individuals, large-scale implementation remains impractical. However, there are promising sentinel values in routine blood tests, such as the RDW parameter, that can aid in the identification of individuals with clonal hematopoiesis. By leveraging these findings, the SInISA project aims to develop strategies for targeted interventions, ultimately reducing the risk of hematological diseases in aging populations.
OUTCOMES
The SIniSA project will generate three main outcomes:
- an organizational model for screening and data governance
- an integrated technological platform supporting such model and
- a clinical study on the ASL5/Liguria area (La Spezia province) to validate the applicability and sustainability of the idea.
